Bicycle Touring

Get a bicycle. You will not regret it. If you live.

My Surly

In October I decided to go touring around California on a bicycle. I did two trips and had a great time, so I thought I would share a little of what happened. Please keep in mind that I am new at this.

The first thing I did was buy a new bicycle. I did a little research and decided on a Surly Long Haul Trucker, a bicycle designed specifically for touring. You can put saddle bags (panniers) on it loaded with camping gear and travel around the world if your heart desires. My heart wanted to just ride around California. I got interested in bicycle touring after I read the book Grandmas Across America .This is not a book I would have bought myself. It was one of a number of books on travel given to my wife. After reading that book I bought some other books on touring such as Miles From Nowhere and A Bike Ride: 12,000 Miles Around the World

Sailing Seemed a Little Risky
(Not my Boat)

I have had some interest in traveling before, but not in a car. About five years ago I bought a boat with the intention of sailing it down to Mexico. It never happened. Buying a boat is a huge investment, and after buying it I started worrying about all kinds of things that could go wrong, and there are a lot of things that can go wrong. Traveling by bike seemed safer.

I decided to take a small trip up to Morro Bay from Los Angeles to see how I would like it, and when that worked out I took the Amtrak train up to San Francisco and rode my bicycle back to Los Angeles.
